Don't you know it's Lady Day?
Up until 1752 the 25th March used to be the start of the new year. It was in 1752 that the calendar moved from the Julian Calendar to the present Gregorian Calendar system. When the calendar system changed to the Gregorian system the year was reduced by 13 days, meaning what was originally the 25th March became the 6th April. You can still find remnants of the old New Years day in the UK and other countries. For example the new tax year still starts on the 6th April in the UK.
But why is it Lady Day? Originally Lady Day was the 25th March, based around the equinox, when night and day are of equal length. The significance of the Lady in Lady Day being on the 25th March becomes obvious if you look to see what happens 9 months after the 25th March, near the end of December.
But why is it Lady Day and not Lady's Day? It's no longer a commonly used term, but when Lady Day was an important day in everyone's calendar the use of Old English did not require the following "s". Lady Day means the same then as Lady's Day does to us now.
How is Lady Day related to buying new flip flops?
That's simple it's the start of the New Year - doesn't that mean we need a party? And if we're having a party don't we need a new outfit? A spring outfit. Which to me means a new light dress and new sandals or flip flops to wear with it. How is it related? Becuase it's an excuse to go shopping :)
So which of this years new styles will go well with a spring party dress?
